Fu così arduo salire il ripido versante ammantato di folto bosco del monte Vaea—sulla cui cima piatta Robert Louis Stevenson aveva voluto essere sepolto, di fronte al vasto oceano, con le scogliere percosse dalla risacca, fra le montagne verdeggianti di fitta foresta primeva—che Charmian domandò al marito come fosse stato possibile trasportarvi la salma. Allora Jack London narrò che alcune centinaia di nativi avevano lavorato una notte intera per aprire un sentiero nella foresta e allestire la sepoltura. Il mattino seguente, i capi delle tribù, accompagnati da numerosi amici dello scrittore scozzese, avevano trasportato la bara, a spalla, solennemente, sin lassù.
Il 9 maggio 1908, in silenzio, mano nella mano, Jack e Charmian indugiarono al sepolcro di Robert Louis Stevenson, e con occhi nebbiosi di lacrime lessero i versi scolpiti sulla lapide. Infine Jack dichiarò: «Non mi sarei mai affannato tanto per vedere alcuna tomba. Tuttavia questa è la tua, Tusitala».
